One of my favorite things? Planning trips!

My plan for the morning: writing a blog entry, while watching The Bachelor. It appears that I will only be doing one of those things. For some god forsaken reason, it isn't on ITunes yet. Usually shows are there the day after, but not this time. I have been so excited for this so I know I will be checking the apple tv about once an hour until it is there :) I am listening to Q102 and they are talking about who gets kicked off.. AGH!!! Oh well.

So anyway- We went to Humo & BBQ Sunday! It was really delicious, a certain do over! As I said in my first post, it is a Texas style BBQ, and the owner is from Texas, but now lives here near us! I got ribs, the specialty, criollo (a little yellow potato that is popular here) chips, and grilled pineapple. Everything was so good, but the portions were HUGE as is the case at most every place that serves meat here. So we both had a lot to take home!

So Carlos and I are planning a weekend getaway. I have been dying to go to Bahia Solano, a town on the Pacific.

It looks like it is absolutely breathtaking. You can go whale watching and the views are just amazing. But apparently it isn't safe. The pacific side of the country is really poor, and higher in crime apparently. We were talking about ideas with Carlos' parents and his mom was like, "Well I wouldn't want go with you to Choco (the state Bahia is in) at all, even Bahia." So I guess if a Colombian doesn't feel safe visiting the Pacific, I shouldn't go either. At least not yet.. But it sure is gorgeous, so maybe one day!

So then we decided that the place we will go is La Guajira. It is the northernmost part of South America, and is basically a desert that goes up to the Caribbean. Carlos said that he's always wanted to go there, but just never has. He said that it isn't that touristy either, so it isn't all built up and "ruined" :)

Carlos has a relative that works in that area, so she can help us find a place to stay, and show us the ropes! At this point it looks like there are some areas that are totally primitive

Primitive meaning a 2 hour drive through the roadless desert to get there, and the accommodations are basically just huts, or nicer areas that are also more busy and hectic, and I would assume littered with people selling stuff on the beach. So we have some work to do, but I am very excited for it. I want to try to go to as many places here in Colombia as possible since travel within the country isn't too expensive. Plus, I want to really get a feel for what Colombia has to offer.

So on another note. In this picture is about 2 lbs of filet mignon. I pad just under $15 for it!! I love that! It isn't all that popular here for some reason. You have to buy the whole package, they don't divide it.. I guess because people don't buy too much of it. I am in heaven now, because we have a popular butcher stocking the market in our neighborhood!! We used to buy all of our meat at the grocery because it was the best quality. But most stores only carry the most popular "chatas" which is like skirt steak. Everyone here LOVES chatas. I don't know if it is because it's cheap (about $3 per pound) or if it's just what everyone buys because it's traditional? In fact, pretty much every restaurant has this (among other cuts) and no matter the time of day, you can get it from about 10 restaurants within in a 2 miles radius of wherever you might be. And you can have it delivered :) People usually save the "lomo", or filet, for very special occasions or when they are eating in a fancy restaurant. Johana probably thinks I am crazy buying the whole package. When the lady told her they only sell it that way, she looked at me like, which other type do you want?? Everyone seemed surprised that I actually wanted the whole thing, and the lady at the counter looked nervous telling me the price. Meanwhile, I am doing double and triple takes. Really?? It's only $14???

Well, time to check out and see if The Bachelor is on iTunes yet :)
